Establishment of self-management in patients with asthma

Studies demonstrated that admission to hospital and even deaths from asthma can be avoided in over 75% by more appropriate care preliminarily. One of the most important requisites in establishing effective symptom control and disease management is patient education. It aims at increasing understanding, skills, satisfaction and confidence in order to enhance compliance and self-management.

Education is a continual process, which includes the establishment of basic information as well as monitoring skills and knowledge over time. In this process a self-management plan is established enabling the patient to manage changes in disease severity in accordance with predetermined guidelines.

Studies evaluating the effectiveness of asthma education methods revealed that more interactive interventions combined with personalized advice lead to the best results. Successful education also relies on the communication skills of the health care professional, which account for better patient outcomes if enhanced with professional training. These benefits may be achieved even without increasing consultation times.
